Slatwall panels are one of the most practical ways to display products in a shop. They’re used in everything from small independent retailers to large commercial stores, providing a flexible way to display merchandise without taking up valuable floor space.
However, not all slatwall panels are the same, and choosing the wrong type can lead to unnecessary expense, installation problems or a display that doesn’t quite work as intended.
If you’re fitting out a new shop, refurbishing an existing one or simply replacing a few panels, here are seven common mistakes worth avoiding.
1. Buying the Wrong Type of Slatwall
One of the easiest mistakes to make is confusing traditional retail slatwall with decorative acoustic wall panels.
Although the names are similar, they’re designed for very different purposes.
Retail Slatwall Panels have horizontal grooves that accommodate specially designed hooks, shelves, brackets and other display accessories. They’re made to provide a practical merchandising system that can be rearranged as stock changes.
Acoustic slat wall panels, on the other hand, are primarily intended as decorative wall coverings and for improving room acoustics. They’re not a direct replacement for retail slatwall.
Before ordering, make sure you’re buying panels designed specifically for shop displays.
2. Not Checking the Panel Dimensions
Slatwall panels are available in different sizes, and it’s important to check the measurements before placing an order.
A commonly used retail panel size is 1200mm x 2400mm, but we also offer 1200mm x 1200mm slatwall panels that incorporate a butt joint at the top. This has many advantages as you can install one panel above the other and the join is hidden by our slatwall inserts. This makes installation much easier and also saves you 50% on delivery as theses panels fit onto a single pallet.
Measure the wall carefully, taking account of doors, windows, sockets and any other obstructions. It’s also worth thinking about how the panels will be positioned and whether they’ll need cutting to fit.
Planning the layout beforehand can help reduce waste and avoid ordering more material than you need.
3. Choosing Panels Based on Price Alone
It’s tempting to choose the cheapest slatwall panels available, particularly when fitting out a large shop.
However, the lowest price doesn’t always mean the best value. Uni-Shop only sell high quality 18mm thick mdf panels, which are manufactured in the UK, to strict tolerances. Unlike cheaper imports that degrade quickly.
Check the panel material, thickness, finish and whether the product is suitable for the merchandise you intend to display.
Standard MDF slatwall is a popular choice for general retail use, while panels with aluminium inserts may be worth considering for certain heavier-duty display requirements.
The important thing is to choose a panel that suits the job rather than simply comparing prices.
4. Forgetting About Slatwall Hooks and Accessories
Slatwall panels are only part of a complete retail display.
You’ll also need to consider the Slatwall Hooks & Accessories such as, Slatwall Glass Shelves, brackets, arms or other fittings that will hold your products.
Different merchandise requires different accessories. Clothing retailers might need hanging Slatwall Rails or arms, while hardware shops often use a combination of Slatwall Floating Shelves, Slatwall Baskets and hooks.
It’s also important to check compatibility. Not every accessory is suitable for every slatwall system, particularly where groove profiles and spacing differ.
Thinking about the accessories before ordering your panels can save time and frustration later.
5. Overlooking the Weight of the Products
Not all retail displays carry the same loads.
A shop selling greetings cards or lightweight packaged accessories will have different requirements from one displaying tools, heavy merchandise or larger boxed products. These maybe better suited to Gridwall Shelving.
The amount of weight a slatwall display can safely support depends on several factors, including the panel construction, fixings, wall structure and the accessories being used.
Slatwall Aluminium Inserts provide additional groove reinforcement in suitable slatwall systems, but they don’t remove the need for correct installation.
If you’re planning to display heavier products, check the suitability of the complete system rather than relying on the panel alone.
6. Not Thinking About the Shop’s Appearance
Slatwall is a practical display system, but it also forms a large part of a shop’s interior.
The colour and finish you choose can make a noticeable difference to the overall appearance of the store.
White slatwall is a popular option for creating a clean, bright display area, while black, grey and wood-effect finishes can suit different types of retail environments.
It’s worth considering how the panels will look alongside your existing Shop Counters & Cabinets, shelving, Retail Cabinets & Counters, flooring and lighting.
A finish that works well in one shop might not be the best choice for another.
7. Not Planning for Future Changes
One of the biggest advantages of slatwall is how easily a display can be changed.
Unlike fixed Retail Display Shelving, slatwall allows retailers to reposition hooks and accessories as their product ranges change.
However, it’s still worth planning ahead.
Think about whether you’ll be introducing new products, changing seasonal displays or expanding the amount of merchandise on show.
Choosing a suitable slatwall system and a good range of compatible accessories from the outset can make future changes much easier.
